Putting This Aside

All politics aside

How do we thrive

Stay alive inside

No hide

Or claim

I’m beside

Myself

Hiding on a shelf

Like the that little red elf

Moping

Hoping

It’ll all go away

We can stay out of the fray

Today

And everyday

Then we say

I’m better than them

I don’t hate Muslim

But that’s all you do

Then you say phew

That got me off the hook

I can turn away, not look

Must.

Do.

What.

I.

Can.

Fight through

Do what you can do

Resist

Persist

Help all humans

Exist

Thrive

Be alive

Live

These Thoughts

I wrote this poem in the early morning darkness on October 2nd. I don’t have television and hadn’t looked at any newsfeed before writing this. I often don’t post immediately because I want what I just wrote to settle with me. I then looked at the newsfeed and was horrified like everyone. What I wrote didn’t fit for the horror. Yesterday I started to alter what you’ll read below with my anger, and stopped. I removed what I had changed because these are the lines that I want to last. Not my ugly reaction to this senseless tragedy. Please help make the possibility of these senseless acts more difficult by encouraging sensible gun reform.

These thoughts I have

They’re from out there

They’re fine to share

These thoughts I have

They’re from in hear

I hold them dear

These thought I have

They come from near

They come from here

These thought I have

Up to pee at four AM

Hear they come again and again

These thought I have

I write them down

If I don’t I’ve lost my own

These thoughts I have

I find each one

I hope the source is never done

These thought I have

I’ve thought them too

I write them down to share with you

These thoughts I have

Some not so nice

Those, I review; once, twice, thrice

These thoughts I have

Come from above?

Some filled with anger, most with love

These thoughts I have

They’re poetic verse

Thankful for flow, unrehearsed

These thoughts I have

I hope they keep coming

In flowing, though my mind is running

THESE thoughts I have

These thoughts I have

They’re fine to share

These thoughts I have

Something To Do

Some might say I’m shallow

I would describe me as a whole.

Regardless of the apt description

I’m aching for humanity’s souls.

My mission in life spreads joy and happiness,

Yet sometimes I fall from the path.

Getting caught in the vitriol and ugliness,

And stuck in their powerful wrath.

So as I continue to struggle

With our current state of affairs.

I want to keep to my mission:

Helping to mend our societal tears

Please won’t you help me reconcile,

How those filled with racism, hate

Can put themselves on a pedestal

And still claim this country as great?

Those concepts to me – antithetical

To helping others move up in their station,

Toward the great ideals of our forefathers

And return greatness to our nation.

But still, that isn’t nearly enough!

We must lead with the following broad message:

Across all peoples and places;

That love and cooperation foremost

Will help heal the rifts ‘twixt the races.
